Toughened or Laminated? How to Choose
Both count as safety glass under Australian Standards, and people often treat them as interchangeable. They are not. They fail in completely different ways, and that difference decides which one belongs in a given position.
How each one works
Toughened glass is heated and then cooled rapidly, which locks the surface into compression. That makes it roughly four to five times stronger than ordinary glass of the same thickness. When it does break, the stored stress releases all at once and the whole panel crumbles into small blunt granules.
Laminated glass is two or more sheets bonded around a plastic interlayer. It is no stronger than ordinary glass — it breaks at about the same load. What changes is what happens next: the interlayer holds every fragment in place, so the panel cracks but stays in the opening.
The distinction that matters
Toughened glass, when it fails, stops being a barrier. The entire panel disappears into a pile of granules, usually in under a second.
Laminated glass, when it fails, remains a barrier. It looks alarming but it is still there.
That single difference drives most of the decision.
Where laminated is the only sensible answer
- Overhead glazing — anything above head height. Toughened granules still fall, and from height they still hurt.
- Balustrades and pool fencing — the whole purpose is to stop someone falling. A barrier that can vanish is not a barrier.
- Anywhere a fall risk exists — high-level windows, mezzanine edges.
- Security-sensitive positions — laminated resists being broken through; toughened does not.
Where toughened is the better choice
- Shower screens — strength matters, wet-area rules are satisfied, and laminated interlayers do not like constant water at the edge.
- Table tops — you want strength against impact and point loads.
- Doors and door side panels — strong, and the granules are far safer than shards at body height.
- Louvre blades — thin sections that need strength, and a blade that crumbles is easier to clear from a frame than one that shatters into spears.
Two practical differences
Toughened cannot be modified. Every cut, hole, notch and polished edge must be finished before it goes into the furnace. Change your mind afterwards and you need a new panel. Laminated can be cut afterwards, though the edge quality suffers.
Laminated blocks UV. The interlayer stops over 99% of it, so it is the right choice where furnishings, artwork or timber floors would otherwise fade. It also damps sound noticeably better than single glazing of the same thickness. Toughened does neither.
Spontaneous breakage
Worth knowing rather than worrying about. Toughened glass can very occasionally break with no impact, days or years after installation, from a microscopic nickel sulfide inclusion in the original float. It is rare. But it is one more reason not to use toughened where a panel disappearing would be dangerous.
What about both?
Toughened laminated is exactly that — two toughened panels bonded with an interlayer. You get the strength of toughened and the retention of laminated. Short version
If a panel failing would let someone or something fall, use laminated. If the risk is impact and the panel is not holding anything back, toughened is usually right and usually cheaper.
