SATINLITE PATTERNED GLASS
Satinlite is a fine, even patterned glass that gives the highest level of privacy in our patterned range. The texture is close and regular, so light passes through freely while shapes behind it are almost completely obscured. It is the glass most people picture when they think of a bathroom window.
That makes Satinlite the default choice for bathroom and toilet windows, ensuites, and any internal panel where privacy is the point rather than decoration. It is also used in doors and partitions where you want a clean contemporary look rather than an ornamental pattern.
Choosing a thickness
Satinlite glass is available in 4mm, 5mm and 6mm, every panel cut to your measurements.
4mm — bathroom and toilet windows, cabinet fronts and small internal panels. This is the most common replacement weight in older homes.
5mm — larger window panes and internal doors, where a 4mm sheet would flex.
6mm — doors, partitions and any panel spanning a wide opening or carrying its own weight.
Replacing a broken pane
Measure the existing glass rather than the frame opening, and measure at the widest point. Tell us the thickness you already have so the new panel seats correctly in the rebate. If you can, photograph the old glass before you order — privacy patterns look similar in a catalogue and are much easier to tell apart side by side.
Where a run of panels shares one opening, matching the pattern matters more than matching it quickly. A single mismatched pane in a row of five is obvious from across the room.
Satinlite or frosted glass?
The two are often confused, because from a distance they do a similar job. The difference is how the privacy is created.
Satinlite’s texture is rolled into the glass while the sheet is being made, so it is part of the glass itself. It cannot wear, scratch off or go patchy. Acid etched frosted glass has its surface treated after manufacture. The finish is smoother and more uniform, and it resists fingerprints well, but it is a surface treatment, and surfaces can mark over years of cleaning.
Choose Satinlite for permanence and value. Choose frosted where you want a flat, even satin appearance with no visible pattern at all.
How Satinlite compares with our other patterns
We stock three patterned glass designs, and they give very different levels of privacy.
Satinlite obscures the most. Fine, regular texture. The right choice when privacy is the requirement.
Spotswood has a distinct linear pattern. Good privacy with a recognisable, slightly retro look, and directional — the lines run one way, so tell us which way they should face.
Cathedral is a soft, irregular ripple. It breaks up the view rather than blocking it, so it suits doors and hallways more than bathrooms.
Which way round does it go?
The pattern sits on one face and the reverse is smooth. In a bathroom, fit the smooth face toward the wet side. It is easier to squeegee and less likely to hold mineral deposits from hard water.
Safety glass requirements
Any panel fitted in a door, beside a door, in a bathroom, or below 500mm from floor level must be safety glass under Australian Standards. Patterned glass is not safety glass on its own. Tell us where the panel is going and we will advise whether you need it toughened, or whether a laminated alternative suits the job better.
Toughening has to be specified when you order, because glass cannot be cut or drilled once it has been toughened.

Common questions
How private is Satinlite compared with the other patterns?
It is the most private of the three we stock. The texture is fine and even, so it diffuses light rather than breaking it into lines — shapes behind it read as a soft blur from close up. Spotswood gives good privacy but through directional lines; Cathedral is the softest and least obscuring.
Satinlite or acid etched?
Satinlite is a rolled texture — part of the glass, cannot wear off, and cheaper. Acid etched is a smooth satin surface that looks flatter and more contemporary and is easier to keep clean. For a bathroom window, Satinlite is usually the better value; for a cabinet door or a feature panel, acid etched usually looks better. Can it be toughened?
Yes, in all three thicknesses. Anything in a door, beside a door, in a shower, or with glass below 500mm from floor level must be toughened under AS 1288 — see when Australian Standards require safety glass.
Which side faces out?
The textured face normally goes inward on a window, so the smooth outer face sheds rain and wipes clean. More in which side of patterned glass faces out.
