You can price a piece of glass on this site in about thirty seconds, without giving us your name, your email or your phone number. Pick the glass, type your two measurements in millimetres, choose an edge finish, and the price appears on the screen. Nothing is sent to you later. There is no callback.

That is the whole point of the site. Most glass suppliers ask you to describe the job and wait for a quote, which is fine if you already know exactly what you want and are happy to wait a day. If you are still deciding — comparing 6mm against 10mm, or working out whether polished edges are worth it — waiting a day for each version of the question is no use at all.

What you need before you start

Three things. That is all.

• The type of glass. If you are not sure, the glass thickness guide covers the common jobs — shelves, tabletops, cabinet doors, splashback panels, window replacements.
• Your two measurements, in millimetres. Width and length for a rectangle, or the diameter for a circle. If you are measuring a broken pane or an existing mirror, read how to measure replacement window glass or how to measure a mirror first — the two jobs are measured differently, and getting it wrong is the most common reason a piece does not fit.
• Whether you want the edges finished, and whether it needs to be toughened. Both are optional and both change the price. There is more on each below.

You do not need to know the area, the weight, or the trade name of the pattern. The calculator works it out.

What actually changes the price

Five things, in roughly this order of impact.

Thickness

The single biggest factor. Glass is priced by the square metre, and the rate climbs steeply with thickness — 12mm is not twice the price of 6mm, it is a good deal more than that, because it is heavier to handle, slower to cut and more expensive to buy. If a job will work in a thinner glass, it is worth knowing that before you order.

Area

Width multiplied by length. Note that this is the size of the piece you order, not the size of the sheet it comes out of — you are not charged for offcuts.

Edge finish

Unpolished edges are cut clean and left as they are. Polished edges are ground smooth and are charged by the linear metre around the perimeter, so a long thin piece costs more to polish than a square one of the same area. Which one you need depends mostly on whether the edge will be seen or touched.

Toughening

Toughened glass is heat treated after cutting, which is why every hole and every millimetre has to be final before it goes into the furnace. It adds a percentage to the piece. Australian Standards require safety glass in a number of situations — shower screens, low-level glazing, doors and their side panels — and those are not optional. When you need safety glass sets out where the line falls.

Shape

Rectangles and circles both price automatically. A circle is priced on its diameter.

Three real examples

These are prices the calculator gives today, so you can see the shape of the numbers before you start.

Notice the middle one. A 6mm piece nearly twice the area of the 4mm piece costs about the same, because the 4mm piece is carrying the cost of polishing and toughening. Options matter more than size on small pieces.

What the price includes

The figure on the screen is the figure you pay. It covers cutting to your sizes, whichever edge finish and toughening you selected, and free delivery anywhere in metropolitan Melbourne — no minimum spend, no flat rate added at checkout. You can check your suburb on the delivery areas page.

There is a minimum charge of $99 per piece. Very small pieces are charged at that minimum, because the handling, cutting and delivery cost roughly the same whether the piece is 200mm or 600mm. If you need several small pieces, order them together — the minimum applies per piece, but the delivery does not.

And if you find the same job cheaper elsewhere, we beat any price by 5%.

When we cannot price it online

The calculator handles rectangles and circles in the thicknesses we stock. It does not handle everything, and rather than have you guess, here is where it stops:

• Holes, cut-outs and notches. Hinge holes for a shower or sauna door, a handle hole, a cut-out for a power point. All of these we do — they just have to be quoted by hand, because the position matters as much as the number.
• Shapes other than a rectangle or a circle. Radius corners, angles, templates.
• Very large pieces. Beyond a certain size the constraint is handling and transport rather than the glass.
• Delivery outside metropolitan Melbourne. We can still arrange freight, we just cannot price it automatically.

• Mirrors — silver in 4mm and 6mm, plus bronze and dark grey toughened.
• Patterned glass — Cathedral, Satinlite and Spotswood, for privacy with light.
• Reeded glass — Narrowline in 6mm and 10mm, for cabinet fronts and internal doors.
• Acid etched frosted glass — 4mm to 12mm, even on one face and it will not scratch off.

• Low iron glass — 4mm to 12mm, no green edge tint.

Common questions

Do I have to give you my details to see a price?

No. The price appears as you type. You only enter your details if you decide to order.

Is the price on screen the final price?

Yes, for anything metropolitan Melbourne and within the options the calculator offers. Delivery is already in it.

How long does it take?

The price is immediate. Making and delivering the glass is not — that depends on the glass type and whether it needs toughening, which is done in batches. If a deadline matters, say so when you order.

Can I change my mind about the size after ordering?

Tell us as soon as you can. Once a piece is cut to your measurements it cannot be re-used, and once it is toughened it cannot be altered at all. This is why it is worth measuring twice.

What if the piece does not fit?

Cut-to-size glass is made to the measurements you supply, so a piece that is the wrong size because the measurements were wrong is not something we can take back. If we have cut it to the wrong size, or it arrives damaged, that is on us — email us and we will sort it out.
