More details, delivery & FAQs
Which glass is in my window?
Most old windows have clear glass, one of a handful of patterned glasses, or frosted glass. Compare your window with the photos below. Hold a ruler against the glass: patterned glass has a raised texture on one face, frosted glass is smooth and white, and film has an edge you can lift. For more help, see how to identify old patterned glass.
Can’t find your pattern? Send a close-up photo with a ruler or coin for scale through our quote form and we will tell you the closest match.
Clear, safety or privacy glass?
- Ordinary windows above waist height: 4mm clear is the usual replacement. Many older homes have 3mm glass; 4mm normally fits the same frame, but check the depth of the rebate.
- Doors, sidelights beside doors and panes within 500mm of the floor must be safety glass under Australian Standards: choose toughened or laminated.
- Bathrooms and toilets: frosted, Satinlite or white translucent laminated glass for privacy. Glass near a bath or shower should be safety glass.
- Street-facing and ground-floor windows: laminated glass is harder to break through and stays in the frame if it cracks.
- Noisy roads: acoustic laminated glass cuts more traffic noise than ordinary glass of the same thickness.
How to measure a replacement pane
- Remove the beading or old putty on one side, or measure the old pane itself once it is out.
- Measure the width and height of the opening in the frame (the rebate), in millimetres, in two places each way.
- Take 2–3mm off each dimension so the new glass fits without forcing. For aluminium windows with rubber seals, measure the old pane and order the same size.
- Check the thickness of the old glass at the edge with a ruler or calipers.

Edges and fitting
Glass that sits inside a frame is usually supplied with cut edges, because the edges are hidden. Choose polished edges for any edge you can see or touch. We do not install: a local glazier, carpenter or handy home owner can fit the pane with new putty, beading or glazing rubber.
Common questions
How much does it cost to replace a window pane in Melbourne?
The glass for a 900 × 1200mm pane of 4mm clear glass is $157.00 delivered, or $186.16 toughened. Fitting by a glazier is extra and depends on the window.
What thickness is window glass?
Most house windows are 3mm to 6mm. 4mm is the most common replacement for older timber windows, and 5mm or 6mm for larger panes. Doors and low windows need toughened or laminated safety glass.
Do I need safety glass in my window?
You need safety glass in doors, beside doors, in panes within 500mm of the floor and near baths and showers. Toughened and laminated glass are both safety glass.
Can you match old patterned glass?
We stock Cathedral, Spotswood, Satinlite, narrowline reeded and acid etched glass, which covers most patterned windows in Australian homes. Compare the photos above or send us a photo.
Do you install window glass?
No. We cut and deliver the glass to your door; your glazier or carpenter fits it.
