Which glass can be toughened?

Toughening is offered on clear glass (4mm to 19mm), low iron super clear glass, grey, bronze and green tinted glass, acid etched frosted glass, Satinlite, Spotswood and Cathedral patterned glass, narrowline reeded glass and most performance glass. Each product page shows a toughening option where it applies.

Laminated glass cannot be toughened after it is made — where you need both, choose a toughened laminated product from our laminated glass range. Our bronze and dark grey mirrors are toughened as standard.

Where you need toughened glass

Under Australian Standards, any panel fitted in a door, beside a door, in a bathroom, or below 500mm from floor level must be safety glass. So must anything that could be walked into, sat on or leaned against — tabletops, shower screens, balustrades and low-level glazing. Toughened glass is the usual choice: it is around five times stronger than ordinary float glass and breaks into small blunt pieces rather than sharp shards.

The exact rule for a panel depends on its size, framing and position. See when you need safety glass, or tell us where the panel is going and we will talk it through before you order.

Before you order

  • Measure exactly. Toughened glass cannot be cut, trimmed or drilled after toughening. If a size is wrong, the panel has to be made again.
  • Choose the edge finish now. Edge work is done before the glass is toughened and cannot be changed afterwards.
  • Holes, notches and cut-outs have to be made before toughening too. Send us your sizes and a sketch through the quote form and we will price it.
  • Look for the mark. Every toughened panel carries a small permanent safety glass mark in one corner.

Toughened or laminated?

Both are safety glass, but they fail differently. Toughened glass is stronger and crumbles into small pieces when it breaks. Laminated glass cracks but stays in one piece, held together by its interlayer, so it is used where the glass must stay in the opening after an impact. A 600 × 900mm panel with polished edges is $167.92 in 6mm toughened clear and $192.22 in 6.38mm clear laminated. Read more in toughened vs laminated glass.

Common questions

How much does toughened glass cost per m²? Clear toughened glass starts at $127 per m² for 4mm, $148 for 6mm and $246 for 10mm, including the toughening. Polished edges are added by the metre and delivery is included in the price shown on screen.

Can toughened glass be cut after it is made? No. Cutting or drilling toughened glass shatters it, so every size, hole and edge finish has to be set before the glass is toughened.

How long does toughened glass take? Toughening adds one working day to production. Most Melbourne orders arrive within 2–5 business days and Sydney orders within 3–5; round or shaped panels take longer.

What thicknesses of toughened glass do you supply? Clear toughened glass from 4mm to 19mm, and low iron and grey toughened glass from 4mm to 12mm.

Do you deliver toughened glass in Sydney? Yes. Delivery is included across metropolitan Sydney as well as Melbourne and inner Geelong. A few tinted and patterned glasses are Melbourne and Geelong only, and their product pages say so.
