Frosted or Patterned Glass for Privacy?
Quick answer: for the most privacy from a patterned glass, choose Satinlite (from $228/m²). For a smooth, modern satin finish that is the easiest to wipe clean, choose acid etched frosted glass (from $211/m²). For the fluted look on cabinet doors and shower screens, choose Narrowline (from $219/m²). Cathedral (from $178/m²) is the cheapest and the least private. Every option below can be toughened except translucent laminate, which is already a laminated safety glass.

Both obscure vision while letting light through. From a distance they can look similar. How they are made is completely different, and that difference decides which one suits your job.
How each is made
Patterned glass has a texture rolled into one face while the sheet is still hot during manufacture. The pattern is part of the glass. It cannot wear off, scratch away or go patchy, because there is no coating — it is the shape of the glass itself.
Frosted glass starts as ordinary clear float and has its surface treated afterwards. Ours is acid etched: an acid wash micro-etches the surface to a uniform satin. The alternative, sandblasting, abrades it mechanically and produces a more open, coarser texture.
Appearance
Frosted reads as a flat, even, milky surface with no visible pattern. It suits contemporary interiors and anywhere you want the glass to disappear into a plain panel.
Patterned has visible texture — ripples, lines or a fine regular grain depending which pattern. It is more decorative, and in a period home it is often what the house originally had.
Privacy level
This depends more on which pattern than on which category:
- Satinlite — fine, regular texture. The highest privacy of our patterns, and the usual choice for bathroom windows.
- Acid etched frosted — comparable to Satinlite. Shapes are heavily obscured.
- Spotswood — distinct linear pattern. Good privacy, recognisable look.
- Cathedral — soft irregular ripple. Breaks up the view rather than blocking it. Not a bathroom glass.
If privacy is the actual requirement, Satinlite or frosted. If you want light and a sense of openness with some obscuring, Cathedral.
Durability
This is where patterned wins on paper. The texture is permanent because it is the glass. Nothing you can do with a cloth will change it.
An etched surface is a surface. In principle it can mark over years of cleaning, particularly if abrasive cleaners are used. In practice, acid etching is far more resilient than sandblasting — the finish is smoother and much less prone to holding fingerprints and grease, which is why we stock acid etched rather than sandblasted.
For a bathroom window that gets wiped occasionally, either will outlast the bathroom. For a heavily handled door panel, patterned has the edge.
Cleaning
Frosted is easier. The etched face is smooth, so it squeegees and wipes in one pass.
Patterned glass has real texture, and texture catches. Fingerprints sit in the ridges, and in a wet area mineral deposits build up in them. This is why you fit the patterned face away from the water and the handling.
Matching an existing panel
If you are replacing one pane in a run, this decides everything. You need the same pattern, not a similar one. Photograph the old glass with something for scale beside it and send it to us before ordering — see identifying patterned glass in older homes.
Neither is safety glass
Worth repeating because it catches people constantly. The pattern and the frosting are decorative. Neither changes how the glass breaks. If the panel is in a door, beside a door, in a bathroom or below 500mm, it must be toughened or laminated regardless of its finish.
