More about this glass, delivery & FAQs

Low iron or ordinary clear glass?

All float glass contains a little iron, which gives it a green tint that shows at the edge and through thick panes. Low iron glass (also called super clear, ultra clear or Starphire) has most of the iron removed, so it looks almost colourless and lets through about 91% of light.

  • Thick glass: at 10mm and 12mm clear glass looks noticeably green; low iron stays clear. That is why it is the usual choice for frameless showers and table tops.
  • Over white or pale colours: white joinery, marble and painted walls keep their true colour behind low iron glass.
  • Display cabinets and shelving: LED lighting and stacked shelves look cleaner without a green edge.

For a small pane in a window frame the difference is hard to see, and clear glass is the cheaper choice.

Which thickness?

4mm to 6mm for cabinet doors, display shelves and picture frames; 8mm for small table tops and longer shelves; 10mm or 12mm for frameless shower panels, large table tops and free-standing screens. Toughen any panel in a door, a bathroom, near the floor or used as a table top.

Common questions

How much more does low iron glass cost than clear?

Nearly twice the price of clear glass of the same thickness. 6mm low iron toughened is $275 per m² against $148 for clear.

Is low iron glass stronger?

No. It has the same strength as clear glass of the same thickness, and it can be toughened the same way.

Is low iron the same as Starphire or Optiwhite?

Yes. Starphire, Optiwhite and ultra clear are brand and trade names for low iron float glass.

Do you deliver low iron glass in Sydney?

Yes. Delivery is included across metropolitan Sydney as well as Melbourne and inner Geelong.

Common low iron jobs

  • Frameless shower screens: 10mm toughened, polished edges. See shower screen glass.
  • Glass table tops: 10mm or 12mm toughened over white, oak or pale stone bases.
  • Display cabinets and bar shelving: 5mm or 6mm doors, 8mm or 10mm shelves, toughened.
  • Splashbacks: paint or wallpaper behind low iron glass keeps its true colour.
  • Low iron reeded glass for cabinet doors: see narrowline reeded glass.

Standard clear float glass contains iron oxide, which gives it a green cast. It is most visible in the edge and through thicker panels. Low iron glass has that iron content substantially reduced, producing a glass that is close to colourless.

The difference is obvious wherever colour accuracy matters or the edge is on show: glass shelving over lit displays, frameless shower screens, tabletops and reeded cabinet fronts. Put a sheet of standard 10mm clear next to 10mm low iron and the standard sheet reads distinctly green at the edge.

Available in 4mm, 6mm, 10mm and 12mm. Low iron carries a price premium over standard clear, so it is worth reserving for the jobs where you will actually see the benefit. A shelf inside a dark cupboard will not show the difference; a display shelf or a glazed cabinet front will.

Toughening is available across the range and is required for shower screens, tabletops and balustrades.
