What safety backing does

Safety backing is a vinyl film applied to the back of the mirror. If the mirror is hit and cracks, the film holds the broken pieces together so they don't fall and cut anyone. The mirror looks exactly the same from the front.

Where you need it

  • Home gyms and studios: weights, bars and balls get close to the mirror.
  • Wardrobe and sliding doors: mirrors that move get knocked.
  • Floor-length and leaning mirrors: anything that could be walked into or tip over.
  • Kids' rooms, hallways and bathrooms: busy areas at body height.

If a builder or certifier has asked for a specific safety rating (for example Grade A to AS/NZS 2208), ask us before you order and we'll confirm what the mirror can be supplied with.

4mm or 6mm?

4mm is fine for wardrobe doors and most wall mirrors. For gym walls and anything over about 1.5 m tall, choose 6mm: it's flatter, so the reflection doesn't wobble, and it feels solid. 6mm mirror weighs about 15 kg per m², so a 1000 × 2000mm piece is around 30 kg.

Safety backing or toughened mirror?

A toughened mirror is about four times stronger and breaks into small blunt pieces, but it costs more and the pieces can still fall out. A safety backed mirror stays in one piece when it breaks. For most homes, backing is the simpler and cheaper option. We also sell toughened bronze and toughened dark grey mirrors.

Common questions

What is a safety backed mirror?

A normal silver mirror with a vinyl safety film stuck to the back. If the mirror breaks, the film holds the pieces together so they don't fall out of the frame or off the wall.

How much does safety backing cost?

$99 per square metre on top of the mirror price, charged on at least 0.5 m² per piece. A 6mm 1000 × 2000mm gym mirror with polished edges is $607 delivered with backing, or $409 without.

Is a safety backed mirror the same as a toughened mirror?

No. A toughened mirror is stronger and breaks into small pieces. A safety backed mirror is ordinary mirror that stays in one piece when it breaks because the film holds it. For gym walls and wardrobe doors, backing is the usual choice.

Does it take longer?

About 2 working days more than a mirror without backing.

Do you install mirrors?

No, we cut, polish, back and deliver the mirror. A glazier or handyman can fix it to the wall, usually with a mirror channel at the bottom, clips at the top and neutral-cure mirror adhesive.
