Price comparison
| Glass | Normal | Toughened |
|---|---|---|
| 6mm clear 600 × 900mm, polished | $152.80 | $167.92 |
| 6mm clear 600 × 900mm, raw edges | $113.80 | $148.27 |
| 10mm clear 1000 × 2000mm, polished | $569 | $643 |
Raw-cut glass costs more to toughen because the edges must be arrised (machine smoothed) before it goes into the furnace. If you want toughened glass, polished edges are often only a few dollars more.
When you need toughened glass
- Doors and the glass panels beside them
- Showers and bath screens
- Windows and panels within 500mm of the floor (why)
- Table tops, shelves under load and anything people may fall against
Good to know
- Toughened glass can’t be cut or drilled afterwards, so order the exact size.
- It is about 4–5 times stronger and breaks into small blunt pieces.
- Need it to stay in one piece when broken? Compare toughened vs laminated glass.
