How laminated glass works
Laminated glass is two sheets of glass bonded to a plastic interlayer. If it breaks, the pieces stay stuck to the interlayer and the panel stays in its frame. 6.38mm, for example, is two 3mm sheets with a 0.38mm interlayer. It is a Grade A safety glass and also blocks most UV light.
Laminated or toughened?
- Laminated cracks but stays in place. Use it where the glass must stay in the opening after a break: overhead glass, balustrades, shopfronts, windows at height and doors where security matters. It is cut to size from stock sheets.
- Toughened is stronger and breaks into small blunt pieces that fall out. Use it for showers, table tops and doors. See toughened glass cut to size.
Need both? Our toughened laminated glass (13.52mm to 21.52mm) is made to order.
Clear, white or grey
- Clear for windows, doors and skylights.
- White translucent for bathroom windows, privacy screens and partitions: it lets light through but you cannot see through it.
- Grey to cut glare on west-facing windows and skylights.
Replacing a laminated window
Measure the glass inside the frame, not the opening you can see, and check the existing thickness at the edge. A small mark in one corner often says the thickness and type, such as "6.38 LAM". Most house windows use 6.38mm.
Common questions
Can laminated glass be cut?
Yes. Standard laminated glass is cut to size from stock sheets. Toughened laminated glass cannot be cut after it is made.
What does 6.38 mean?
It is the total thickness: two 3mm sheets plus a 0.38mm interlayer. 10.38 is two 5mm sheets plus 0.38mm.
Does laminated glass reduce noise?
A little. For a bigger difference choose our acoustic laminated glass, which has a sound-damping interlayer.
Do you deliver laminated glass in Sydney?
Yes for most of the range, including grey, white translucent and 8.38mm and 12.38mm clear. The clean cut range (6.38mm and 10.38mm clear, 6.38mm white) is Melbourne and Geelong only, and those product pages say so.
Common laminated glass jobs
- Replacement house windows: 6.38mm clear, cut to the size inside the frame.
- Bathroom and toilet windows: 6.38mm white translucent for privacy.
- Skylights and roof glazing: laminated stays in place if it breaks; follow the skylight maker's specification.
- Shopfronts and security doors: 10.38mm or 12.38mm clear.
- Quieter bedrooms: see our acoustic laminated glass.
Laminated glass is two or more sheets of glass bonded around a plastic interlayer. When it breaks, the interlayer holds the fragments in place instead of letting them fall, which is why it is used in overhead glazing, balustrades, shopfronts and anywhere a falling pane would be dangerous.
It also blocks over 99% of UV, so it is the right choice where furnishings, artwork or timber floors would otherwise fade. The interlayer damps sound as well, making laminated glass noticeably quieter than single glazing of the same thickness.

Our range covers 6.38mm and 10.38mm clear laminate, 6.38mm and 10.38mm translucent laminate, and 13.52mm, 17.52mm and 21.52mm toughened laminate. The decimals describe the make-up: 6.38mm is two 3mm sheets with a 0.38mm interlayer. The toughened laminate weights are two toughened panels bonded with a 1.52mm clear EVA interlayer, and are used for structural balustrades and pool fencing.
Translucent laminate uses a white interlayer, giving privacy and diffused light in a single panel. It is a good option for bathroom glazing and internal partitions where you want obscurity without a textured surface.
